Capability Readiness Assessment

Identify the conditions that help learning become organisational capability.

Training can transfer knowledge. Capability is what an organisation can do with it.

This assessment has three parts. First, check whether the problem is really a capability gap, or a process, resource or contextual problem that training will not fix. Then rate the five conditions that help learning become organisational capability. Finally, plan the intervention using the sequence Need → Audience → Capability → Format → Application → Measurement.

Consider five conditions

  1. Relevant knowledge and clear expectations
  2. Opportunities to practise in context
  3. Access to support and feedback
  4. Ways to share and retain knowledge
  5. Leadership reinforcement and measurement

Rate each condition, identify the weakest link and choose one practical improvement to test.

About this worksheet

Part 1 · Is it a capability problem?

Think of one specific task or behaviour that is not happening as it should. Answer for that task.

Are expectations for the task clear and agreed?
Do current processes and systems make the task workable?
Do people have the time, tools and information they need?
Does the working environment support it?

Priorities, incentives and signals from leadership.

If all of that were in place, could people do the task well today?

What kind of problem is this?

Part 2 · Rate the five conditions

How well does your organisation provide each condition for this task?

1 = absent5 = strong and reliable

Relevant knowledge and clear expectations

People know what is expected of them and have the knowledge the task requires.

Opportunities to practise in context

People can try new skills on real or realistic work before it matters most.

Access to support and feedback

Someone notices, guides and gives useful feedback as people apply what they learn.

Ways to share and retain knowledge

What people learn is captured, shared and does not leave when they do.

Leadership reinforcement and measurement

Leaders model, prioritise and check the new way of working.

Your weakest link

Part 3 · Plan the intervention

If learning is part of the answer, work through the sequence. Each step can change the one before it.

The performance challenge, in observable terms.
Who, what they already know, their constraints and access needs.
What people must be able to understand, decide or do afterwards.
The format that suits the capability and the audience.
How and where people will apply it at work, with what support.
Evidence beyond completion: demonstrated learning, application and outcomes.
